UNSCHOOLING ADJACENT
Some of the many organizations doing work around liberated learning practices share some of the values and practices of unschooling.
States of Mind: A UK based organization trying to address the psychological toll that school takes on children and offering young people a voice
Place based Education - A general long introduction to the practice.
Ecoversities Alliance: EA defines itself as a group of “learners and communities reclaiming diverse knowledges, relationships and imaginations to design new approaches to higher education.” They are creating new universities around the globe that aim to offer young people new paths toward achieving their hopes or goals.
An example of a new university, the first specializing in sustainability in Mexico.
Project Defy in India, creating “Nooks”: ”Nooks” are educational centers for self-determined learning, or – in short – “schools without teachers”. They enable the members of a local community to carry out their own learning projects based on individual interests and needs.
The Friendship Bench, Zimbabwe - In the same way as our children are surrounded by educators everywhere in their community and not just in schools, we are all surrounded by mental health healers in our communities, not just in formal practices. The Friendship bench makes use of communal wisdom in the same way I hope unschooling spaces will create a revolving door of learning between young people and all the educators in their communities.
